Puppy Training Sit & Lie down

Updated: Aug 11, 2022

Part of a series of little training videos I have made. Watch the video then read through the description for a break down of the video and tips for training your puppy.

Puppy training Sit & lie Down

Using a lure and reward, Positive Reinforcement Training

Getting your puppy to Sit

As you can see in the beginning of the video, I lure the puppy towards me just by holding

a piece of food in my hand letting the puppy sniff it they will try to get the treat out of your hand but that is what keeps them interested to follow it, and then by moving my hand slowly in the direction I want the puppy to go you will see the puppy will follow it. Then by lifting the piece of food up but keeping it close to their nose the puppy lifts its head which as you can see in the video makes the bum go down so the puppy is in a sit position which is when you reward by giving them the piece of food but try to only give the reward when all their feet are touching the ground not pawing your hand you can see in the first half of the video I don’t give the reward until she has all her feet on the ground I don’t move it away I just didn’t release the reward from my hand until she was in a good sit.

Teaching lie down

You can see from the video I lure the dog into a sit and then by holding the lure close to the nose of the puppy again to sniff I move it in a downward motion to the floor, watch the movement of my hand closely in the video you can see once her nose is to the ground I move the lure slowly away from the puppy slightly and as their nose follows it puts the puppy in a lie down position then I rewarded this behaviour. Your puppy does need to be in a sit positions to start with for this method to work because if they are standing, they will just follow the lure by walking and if they are in a sit you are already half way there. Some puppies may need a different method to get them into a lie down position and alternative method (Not shown in the video) to try is if you sit on the floor with your legs straight out in front of you and bend one knee up but keeping your leg low the idea is to get the puppy to crawl under you leg and when their body touches the floor give the reward and work up from there. It is a much more comfortable and kinder way to lure your puppy into a lie down and sit position than man handling them and pushing them into these positions, Your puppy needs to enjoy training so they can build bonds and trust with their trainers and family.

Your puppy will get distracted when you’re training, this is when the lure can help get their attention back, If you listen to the video I don’t use many words at all, I use a soft voice and only saying “good Girl” and then started to add the verbal commands in. I ignored any unwanted behaviour and only reward the behaviour I wanted. Try not to be to vocal or excitable when training, if you’re trying to train a well balance calm dog being over excited in training sessions may not help you. If you are struggling to keep your puppy’s attention then do add a bit more energy to keep them motived it’s all about getting the balance that’s right for your puppy. In the second half of the video you can hear the neighbours children, training in environments when there is distractions will help you for when you start to take them out into the world out of the house and garden as there is a lot of distractions in the big world out side their home.

When your teaching sit you don’t usually train lie down at the same time when your first training your puppy but as this particular puppy was picking it up so quickly, I upped the difficulty level to her training. This puppy was 8-week-old at the time when I filmed this video and I had only done one testing session before hand to see how she learns and to see how she would go on for the purpose of the video. You need to find the right difficulty level for your puppy, teach a good sit on its own first then move onto lie down you need to go at your puppy’s pace. How quickly your puppy picks things up also goes of your dog training ability which is why I say help you to train your puppy to the best of your ability, If your training your first ever puppy you are learning just as much as they are so just be patient and you will soon see the befits and feel the reward yourself.

The purpose of these training videos is to help you train your puppy to the best of your ability helping you to get what you want out of your dog. Puppy training is hard so please don’t get frustrated when things are not going to plan, Mistakes will be made but that’s okay. If you are finding it hard to get ahead with your puppy speak to a dog trainer or enrol your puppy into puppy classes, Its is always good to do your own research and educate your self so you can get the best results.

Hope this helps and good luck :)
